My first one for today is this guy
This guy was mine and my friend's first experience of an Instagram scammer. We were not really at all expecting it and his patter sounded plausible. Now I a looking back at what happened with this guy and all of his patter then; he is so fake.
This is his backstory - please note there may be variations to this one because he talked to me and my friend and we compared notes
- His name is Steven Gilbert
- He has two daughters, and his wife died of cancer
- He lives in Parkersburg, West Virginia or is from Texas
- He is a contract engineer specialising in building oil/gas/petroleum pipelines and stations
- He studied petroleum engineering
- He has a doctorate degree in chemical engineering
- He is half Norwegian and half American
He takes his time getting to know you on Instagram. There was the usual exchange of platitudes about beauty and he asked all the usual questions to make a basic introduction. Looking back he is around a lot to chat with and at some times that really an American would not be around unless they do night shift work. He is very pleasant to chat to and easy to get to know and we were both wondering what the heck he was up to and whether he was genuine. We quite quickly came to the conclusion that he was not genuine and was after something. We decided to keep him chatting until we found out. Sadly it was not me. On my personal Instagram account he showed his true colours very early in our conversation - literally 2 comments in he responded in Pidgin English. I asked what he meant and he realised his mistake and blocked me super fast. To my business Instagram account he chatted for a while but when I said that I was happily in a relationship, he blocked me too.
To my friend he showed his true colours indeed. After a little while of chatting he asked if she wanted to take part in a prayer circle for charity at his sister's church, in Maryland. All she needed to do was come up with10 prayer points for them as a couple, send them back to him for them to be included in prayer circle at his church every day. This would go alongside a donation and fasting for the two days from 6am to 12pm. The donation was to go to an orphanage but the payment was to be made to his sister's Western Union account. So dodgy. No donation was made and my friend also got in touch with the church and the orphanage in question which were both legitimate concerns as was the address given for his sister in Maryland.
